Tesla Semi To Reach Scale Production In The Next 24 Months

Tesla CEO Elon Musk speaking at Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting talked about the electric semi-truck the company plans to reveal in September. Musk revealed that the company has been working closely with its “biggest customers” on the design of the truck.

Tesla is including the companies in the design process to help ensure their needs are met. “We are getting them closely involved in the design process,” he said.

“We are showing off a working prototype at the end of September, but we have shown it to people who buy heavy duty trucking and they all love it. They just want to know how many can they buy and how soon,” Musk said during Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting hosted at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California.

He also said he “really recommends” people show up for the unveiling, saying “maybe there is a little more than we are saying here”.

“We believe the Tesla Semi will deliver a substantial reduction in the cost of cargo transport, while increasing safety and making it really fun to operate.”

‘Tesla Semi’ is an heavy-duty all-electric truck program at Tesla led by Jerome Guillen, Tesla’s former Model S Program Director and VP of Vehicle Engineering. Before joining Tesla, Guillen was an executive at Daimler where he successfully led the development of the Cascadia truck program.

He also said the company will likely reach full-scale production for the semi in 18 months to two years.
