Pressure Systems International (PSI) recognized Utility Trailer Manufacturing Co. with its 2014 Athena Award for Excellence during the recent Utility Service Parts annual meeting in Ft Lauderdale.

The award is given to the North American trailer manufacturer with the highest utilization of PSI’s ThermALERT option available with Meritor Tire Inflation System (MTIS) by PSI.

The patented ThermALERT option — the only wheel end heat sensor that is part of an automatic tire inflation system (ATIS) — warns drivers of potential catastrophic excessive wheel end heat. It has been standard on ATIS-outfitted Utility trailers since it was introduced to the commercial vehicle industry by PSI in 2006.

ThermALERT can prevent costly trailer fires and wheel offs by warning the driver, and the dispatcher for GPS-equipped trailers, of dangerously high wheel end temperatures that can be caused by lack of lubricant, wheel seal failure or poor maintenance practices.

During presentation of the award to Steve Bennett, executive vice president and Hal Bennett, president and CEO of Utility Trailer Manufacturing Co., Frank Sonzala executive vice president of PSI, said, “Utility recognized early on that ThermALERT offered its customers who spec automatic tire inflation systems an added benefit that could ultimately save them additional money and enhance its safety profile.”
